Translucent Porcelain Sculptures

These translucent porcelain sculptures can also be called lithophanes.  The word lithophane means appearance in stone.  Popularized in the 1820s, lithophanes are now usually produced as night lights.   I sculpt these shadow images first as a ceramic negative relief mold.   The deeper the depression, the thicker the porcelain casting.  The porcelain must be high fired until it is vitreous.  When illuminated from the back, the thicker areas are darker and thinner areas are brighter.
